Safeco Insurance evaluation: “The insurance company inside adjuster priced what it could cost to rebuild my home, but wrote the entire transaction up as a repair.   1. it sounds as if the original structure was not built to proper housing codes. It was less expensive for Safeco to have the home rebuilt to meet those requirements, rather than fix the existing structure. The mortgage company has an insurable interest in your home, it can legally request to be added to your policy. The mortgage company also has the right to determine how the repairs will be completed, because again, they have a financial interest.
