  1. Key takeaway: Don't focus on the specifics of my situation! Instead, set a goal for YOUR life and apply the six steps. You can't go wrong by increasing your income, reducing expenses and paying off debt.

Here are some facts for you…

    I come from a middle-class family.
I dropped out of high school at age 16.
I took the first job I could get as a cashier at a Denny's.
I enrolled in community college a few months later.
I transferred to a 4-year college and graduated at age 19.
I was hired as a TV producer for $21,000 a year.
I worked my way up to a major market and then a cable news outlet.
I have been helping people save money since 2010.

  2. So you bought a house in 2010 when the country was going through some very difficult times but weren't? How did you manage that? Also you managed to buy a house what was depressed in value and most people can't find those. Also you bought a house below your means. A 15 year loan means higher payments I didn't qualify for. I bought a house in 1999 and almost lost it many times because I could not make the payments. Lost my job, went through a divorce, got scammed out of thousands more than a few times too.

  9. Great job staying focused on your goal and seeing it through.
Some of us need to be less aggressive than you were based upon our values. (Yes goals are driven by values). Getting married and having a family has high value for me. So I am going to set a goal of paying off a 30 year mortgage in 15 years. Thanks, nice job.

  10. Congratulations paying off your loan. Today peoples average stay in a home every 7 to 8 years, it is not the same 30 year ago people stay in a home for 30 years, I see peoples today build a new home and live in it for 5 years and then sell it and build another new home, that the way things are now not living and paying off homes that the old mindset in the past I believe. Home are basically a tool to make money.

  12. In Canada, if you have an open mortgage (a mortgage you can pay as much money on as you'd like on top of your monthly payment), the banks place you in double to triple the regular interest rate. If you're in a closed mortgage, the bank sets a limit on how much you can pay per year on top of your monthly payments (haven't seen anything above $25000/year on a closed mortgage). It's kind of shitty how much control our banks have over us.

  13. If you live in an expensive city, you must have a good income to pay extra to your mortgage. Maintenance and repair assessments will claw back any extra income, including expense savings (cable entertainment eating out)

    Thanks anyway!
